The course will provide a broad overview of the field of addictions and the impact of addictions on individuals and society. Students will be introduced to a variety of models and theories of addiction. The social and cultural environments within which substance abuse and addictions exist will be explored. Students will be introduced to scientifically supported models of prevention and treatment.

Covered topics include: substance use, misuse, and abuse, theories of addiction, pharmacological approaches to addiction and treatment, codependency and enabling, compulsive behaviors, co-occurring disorders/dual diagnosis, relapse and recovery, and treatment modalities.

This course is the prerequisite for SAPP 407 Assessment and Treatment
