This course will examine how an GLBTQUI individual's sense of self develops. Topics include examining the following: First Realization of Self, Coming Out Process, Peer's and Families' Reactions Support vs Opposition, Teenage Years, Sexual Health, and Authenticity of One's True Self. We will also examine Past Societal Disapproval, Current Societal Disapproval, and Positive Societal Changes in relation to how it affects an GLBTQUI individual's identity, mental health, substance abuse and suicidality. Finally we will examine how best to support positive self-identity and self-esteem with GLBTQUI individuals.
Please be aware that this course will be extensive and require about 4-5 hours a week of your time to complete assigned readings, tests, discussion forums and a final paper.
