Biography: |
Nigel is a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor and Certified Prevention Specialist and has been active in the field of substance abuse prevention and community organizing since 1990. He served as Project Director for the Oregon Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking, and as the National Coordinator of Youth In Action for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Nigel develops and delivers unique, customized training and technical assistance to community-based organizations throughout the United States, and teaches Addictions Pharmacology, Community Organizing and Alcohol & Marijuana at the University of Oregon and Community Organizing at Portland Community College. He believes in a collaborative and interactive approach to engaging people of all ages and from all cultures in projects that create a more conscious, more informed, and healthier society for all of us. |

History of Marijuana and its use in the United States, including, epidemiology (patterns of use), pharmacology (drug action), acute and chronic effects, and more. |
| Course
Goals: |
Upon completion of this course students will:- Understand how marijuana use began in America, and how it grew.
- Know how marijuana works in the brain and body.
- Develop an understanding of how marijuana is cultivated and why its potency has increased.
- Understand tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal.
Develop an understanding of the issues surrounding medical marijuana in Oregon. - Develop a balanced and unbiased perspective on the legal and societal aspects of marijuana in today's society.

In class comprehensive exam at end of class. Plus a written assignment due by 4:30 pm in the SAPP office located at 180 Esslinger, U of O. 90-100 pts = A 80-89 pts = B 70-79 pts = C 60-69 pts = D 59 or less pts = F |
